At only 16 years old, Teenage Climate Activist Greta Thunberg has already been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for her influence in spreading climate change awareness. She first became a household name in September 2018 when she started the School Strike for the Climate, which took place in over 2000 cities worldwide and involving an estimated 1.4 million participants.

“The year 2078 I will celebrate my 75th birthday. If I have children maybe they will spend that day with me. Maybe they will ask me about you. Maybe they will ask why you didn’t do anything while there still was time to act. You say you love your children above all else and yet you’re stealing their future in front of their very eyes. Until you start focusing on what needs to be done rather than what is politically possible there is no hope.”

Although more than 7 out of 10 Americans now believe that global warming is a real personal threat, little has been done politically to overcome the climate crisis and ecological crisis we are currently facing. In response to a major UN report revealing the ravaging impact humans continue to have on our planet, Ms Thunberg said that “the message is clearly not getting through” to people in power. She firmly believes that determined and immediate action must be taken to mitigate pollution issues before answering economic questions.

“And yes, I know we need a system change rather than individual change. But you can not have one without the other.”

Of course, this is a tough pill for many politicians and businesspeople to swallow. But let’s remember that it took just one determined teenager to spark mass global awareness on climate change. She has now gotten millions of students, adults, and celebrities on board so politicians are now forced to listen.
