Katharine Hayhoe, author of ‘A Climate for Change: Global Warming Facts for Faith-Based Decisions’, is a professor of political science at Texas Tech University, an atmospheric scientist, and a devout evangelical Christian. Though she may seem like an unlikely advocate for climate science, Dr. Hayhoe has made it her mission to advocate for climate action without alienating people who tend to reject scientific explanations.

Only 28% of Christian fundamentalists believe that climate change is real and caused by humans. Dr. Hayhoe believes that climate change is very much a humanitarian issue– making faith and climate science ‘two sides of the same coin’.

Even though climate scientists overwhelmingly agree that human activity is 100% causing climate change, it’s a wonder why so many people are still skeptical that it is. According to Dr. Hayhoe, most people reject the scientific facts not because they don’t understand basic physics, but because they don’t see the consequences that could affect their lives directly. People are being sold the false idea that the solutions available would destroy the economy and allow the government to control people’s way of life.

The risk seems all the less imminent when it comes to affecting future generations, and when the solutions seem so negative and the benefits so invisible, what normal person would admit there is a problem to be solved? Dr. Hayhoe says it helps to talk about the tangible facts, using recent examples to help people understand how serious climate change is.

The summer of 2011 set a record for number of days over 100 degrees. Imagine if that were the norm within a couple of decades. How would we cope with that? We couldn’t. So what are we gonna do about it? How will we prepare?
